Creating a Unique Basque Burnt Cheesecake Experience

Soulgood Bakery was born from Owner-baker Anjaylia Chan’s attention and care for her closest ones in life. During the pandemic, people began to feel distant from their loved ones, lonely and isolated. In an act to ensure that her friends and family felt cared for, Anjaylia began gifting freshly baked homemade Basque Burnt Cheesecakes. After roaring feedback on her heartfelt creations, she was inspired to share her creations with Hong Kong and thus founded Soulgood Bakery. With years of baking experience and inspired by San Sebastian’s Basque Burnt Cheesecake, Anjaylia experimented with different ingredients, and sources to create a truly unique recipe. Her rigorous R&D led to interesting discoveries, including the variation and characteristics of cream cheeses from different regions. A closely-guarded combination of Japanese, Australian, and American sources gives rise to the intricate and special flavour of Soulgood Bakery’s signature Basque Burnt Cheesecakes.  Combining flavours of her upbringing in Hong Kong with Western desserts, Anjaylia invented a unique way of creating Basque Burnt Cheesecake, infusing unique blends of Chinese tea with the Spanish cake, while maintaining a light texture with refreshing and modestly sweet flavours in the perfect balance of sweetness, tartiness, and decadence of cheesecakes.

Known not only for their rich flavours, but also for their indulgent “lava” centres, the molten cores of the cakes enhance the deep robust tones of the featured flavour, Soulgood Bakery’s Basque Burnt Cheesecakes uniquely stand out for their three layers of taste. Beginning with a caramelised and lightly charred exterior, contrasted by a middle molten layer, and a finale of its half-baked, creamy body. Such a variety in textures also allow cake-lovers to enjoy an indulgent cheesecake experience. In addition to the “lava” centre cheesecakes, Soulgood Bakery is also offering a soft-centred option, for a slightly different experience!

The Captivating Flavours - The First CBD Basque Burnt Cheesecake in Hong Kong

Soulgood Bakery has been a fervent talk of the town recently, having launched Hong Kong’s very first CBD Basque Burnt Cheesecake. To help people soothe their minds and bodies during these turbulent times, Anjaylia was the first to actualise the concept of infusing CBD into her sweet creations.

Amongst the wide variety of flavours, tea-lovers will especially enjoy their range of tea-infused Basque Burnt Cheesecakes with the molten and creamy cake. Using premium tea leaves, the Chinese Iron Goddess tea meets Basque Burnt Cheesecake in a careful balance of both the earthy tones of oolong tea and refreshing flavours of cheesecake. The rich and smoky notes of the tea mingle with the creaminess of the cheesecake to produce an enchanting rich and creamy sensation, without the heaviness. In celebration of the grand opening of Soulgood’s K11 Musea pop-up, an extravagant exclusive cheesecake flavour will be available throughout August and September only, made with shredded premium Earl Grey tea leaves with a garnish of Kanazawa Gold Leaf, perfect for an anniversary, birthday celebration, or an indulgent treat.

The Story Behind Soulgood Bakery

To Anjaylia Chan, the Spanish confection is more than just an indulgent dessert, but a vessel to connect food and soul. Before its booming popularity, some may assume its taste from the charred and unconventional appearance. “The cake may look very modest on the outside, but it is the interior of the cake where the real beauty lies. Basque Burnt Cheesecakes may look ordinary but it carries various layers and characters” says Anjaylia. “The ”soul” of Basque Burnt Cheesecake resonates with my upbringing and personal values, to bring ”good” value, meaning, and taste experience” she adds of the story behind her brand name, Soulgood. “I truly believe that whenever someone creates something with all their heart, that creation is given a soul. So each and every cheesecake needs to be made with the same care, effort, and passion to give them their soul. I hope that the souls of my cakes inspire people to reflect on their own soul and uncover their passions”.

Prior to her beloved bakery business, Anjaylia lived the nine-to-five routine. As she discovered her true enthusiasm for baking, Anjaylia left her comfort zone and dedicated her full time and commitment to Soulgood Bakery. Hoping that she can bring her personal values to a wider audience, Anjaylia built Soulgood Bakery from the ground up to connect good souls to good food. As a woman entrepreneur, she is constantly motivated by the everyday experience of working for what she loves. Curating heart-warming desserts by hand has helped Anjaylia realise the pure joy and reward in seeing people enjoy her sincerest creations.
